Optimizing Videos for YouTube Search in 2010

YouTube offers video uploaders many features to ensure their videos get found more often in searches.  And we’re ready to share them!  A few extra steps that will get your video in front of more consumer faces:

1) Use the YouTube Keyword Suggestion Tool.  Input terms into the tool to describe your video, for new ideas.  If you’ve already uploaded your video (or want to directly compete against another video), input the video’s YouTube URL for its keywords.

2) Then, start typing video keywords in the YouTube.com search bar.  Knowing people use autocomplete suggestions, consider the suggestions list as possible keywords.  The autocomplete suggestions are the most popular terms to complete a given search query:

3) Use research from #1 and #2 above to populate YouTube’s video titles, descriptions, and tags fields.  The words and phrases you type into these fields will help your video rank high in search results, and thus raise viewer numbers.

  • Titles should be around 100 characters.
  • Descriptions can include up to 5,000 characters
  • Tags can be 120 characters

4) Add annotations to your videos, as described in this blog entry.  Annotation types include speech bubbles, notes, spotlights and pause annotations.  Annotations can also be used to link videos and channels, encourage feedback, or to earn subscriptions to the uploader’s YouTube channel.

5) Finally, advertise your videos with the paid YouTube Promoted Videos program:
